Varroa Mite Treatment: How to Pick the Right Option and When to Use It

Here’s the short answer: treat when your mite counts tell you to, not because the calendar says it’s treatment season. The threshold most beekeepers use is 2-3%, which works out to 6-9 mites in a 300-bee alcohol wash. Below that, keep monitoring. At or above it, pick a treatment that fits your conditions and get it on the hive.

The harder question is which treatment. Every option on the market has real constraints: temperature windows, honey super restrictions, brood-stage limitations, resistance concerns. Pick the wrong one for your situation and you’ll burn two weeks thinking you treated when you didn’t. Here’s how we think through it in our own yard.
Why August Is the Deadline That Matters
The bees your colony raises in late August and September are not like the summer bees flying today. Summer bees live about six weeks. Winter bees live four to six months, and they’re the ones that have to carry the colony from October to March.
Winter bees are built in the larval stage. If varroa mites are feeding on those larvae and pumping viruses into them while they develop, the bees that emerge are physiologically compromised, and no treatment applied in October can undo that. You can kill every mite in the hive in November and still lose the colony in January, because the winter bees were damaged before they ever emerged.
This is why the August count is the most important one of the year. If you’re at 2% or higher in early August, the knockdown treatment needs to happen now, so the mite load is low while the winter bee brood is being raised. Treating after the damage is done is closing the barn door after the horse is gone.
The Main Treatment Options
There’s no single best treatment. There’s a best treatment for your temperature, your brood situation, and whether you have honey supers on. Here are the four workhorses plus the non-chemical tools.
Formic Acid (Formic Pro)
Formic acid is the only common treatment that kills mites under the brood cappings, where 60-80% of the mites in a broodright colony are hiding. That makes it a strong choice for a summer knockdown when the colony is full of brood.
The constraints: it needs daytime temperatures roughly between 50 and 85°F. Above that range, the acid flashes off too fast and you risk killing brood and sometimes the queen. Queen loss is a real, documented risk with formic in hot weather, so if you’re staring at a week of 90°F days, wait for a cooler stretch or choose something else. The upside is that Formic Pro is labeled for use with honey supers on, which almost nothing else is.
Oxalic Acid (Dribble or Vaporization)
Oxalic acid, applied as a sugar-syrup dribble or as a vapor, is cheap and very effective against phoretic mites, the ones riding around on adult bees. Its weakness is that it does nothing to mites under cappings.
That makes timing everything. In a colony full of brood, a single oxalic treatment might reach only a fraction of the mite population. In a broodless colony, it can knock down 90% or more in one shot. This is why oxalic is the classic late-fall and winter treatment: once the colony goes broodless (for many of us that’s November or December), every mite in the hive is exposed, and one treatment cleans them up going into the coldest months. We treat every hive with oxalic during the broodless window regardless of what we did in August. It’s cheap insurance.
Thymol (Apiguard)
Apiguard is a thymol gel that works by fumigation: the bees distribute it, the vapor kills mites. It needs warmth to volatilize, roughly 60-100°F, and it works best in the 60-80°F range. Too cold and it just sits there.
Supers come off for thymol, since it can taint honey. The full treatment is two gel trays over about four weeks, so plan for the hive to be occupied that whole time. It’s a solid late-summer option after the harvest, and it’s a useful rotation partner if you leaned on formic or amitraz last year.
Amitraz (Apivar)
Apivar strips are the long-game option: strips hang in the brood nest for 42-56 days, killing phoretic mites continuously as brood cycles turn over and mites emerge from cappings. It’s not temperature-sensitive the way formic and thymol are, which makes it forgiving.
Two big caveats. Honey supers must be off for the entire treatment, and 42-56 days is a long time to keep supers off in a flow. And amitraz resistance is real and spreading. Mite populations exposed to Apivar year after year stop responding to it. If Apivar is your only tool, you’re breeding the mites that will beat it. Rotate.
Non-Chemical Tools
These are worth using, but be honest about what they are: pressure relievers and monitoring aids, not standalone cures.
- Drone brood removal: mites prefer drone brood, so a frame of drone comb acts as a trap. Freeze it once it’s capped and you remove mites with it. Forget to pull it and you’ve built a mite factory.
- Brood breaks: caging the queen or making a split interrupts mite reproduction and creates a broodless window, which pairs beautifully with an oxalic treatment.
- Screened bottom boards: some fallen mites drop out instead of climbing back on. The effect on mite load is small. Their real value is as a monitoring surface under a sticky board.
The Rules That Apply to Everything
The label is the law. That’s not a figure of speech. These are EPA-registered pesticides, and the label directions on temperature, dose, duration, and honey supers are legally binding. Follow them exactly.
Rotate treatment classes. Don’t run the same chemistry year after year. Formic in summer, oxalic in winter, thymol or amitraz in the rotation the following year. Resistance is how good treatments stop working.
Retest 1-2 weeks after treatment. This is the step most beekeepers skip. A treatment is not a result; a post-treatment wash is. If you started at 9 mites per 300 and you’re at 1 two weeks later, it worked. If you’re at 7, something went wrong (temperature, dosing, resistance) and you still have a problem to solve before winter. Never assume.

A Seasonal Rhythm That Works
- Spring (April/May): baseline wash on every hive. Low numbers now buy you time, but spring mite growth is exponential, so don’t coast.
- Summer (June/July): monthly alcohol washes. Watch the trend, not just the number.
- August: the knockdown. If any hive is at 2% or above, treat now, before winter bees are raised. Formic if temperatures allow supers to stay on, thymol or Apivar after harvest.
- Late fall/winter (November/December): broodless oxalic cleanup on every hive, then verify with a final check.
Mites are the number one killer of managed colonies in the US, and the losses are mostly preventable. Count, treat on the number, confirm it worked, and your bees go into winter with a fighting chance. Then all that’s left is getting them through it.
